coachbarn_stephenstraub_print1smThe Coach Barn, by Stephen Straub

J.P. Morgan Private Bank, Christies and LandVest hosted a gathering for clients and advisors at the historic Coach Barn at Shelburne Farms on Thursday, June 12, 2014. Major landowners and collectors from Vermont and New York exchanged ideas with an expert panel on current topics for estate planning and philanthropy.

The panel included Andrew Feder, who heads up the Private Banks real estate practice; Elizabeth Chapin, Christies Managing Director for New England, and Ruth Kennedy Sudduth, Director of LandVests Residential Brokerage Division, and was moderated by Erin Hogan, Executive Director of the Philanthropy Centre at J.P. Morgan. Topics included:

  • Best practices for planning for real assets held by families
  • Key issues to consider in conservation gifting
  • Managing emotion in decision-making about art and real estate

The evening began with an introduction by Alec Webb, President of Shelburne Farms, whose family set the gold standard for conservation planning with their leadership in the preservation of Shelburne Farms. Josh Carter, head gardener, illustrated philanthropy in practice, engaging the community in sustainable agriculture at Shelburne Farms. Guests left with pints of organic maple syrup from nearby Shaker Mountain Farm in Starksboro, Vermont.
