Some properties are purchased for a moment in time. Others are held for generations.  Across New England and the Adirondacks, family compounds have long represented a distinct kind of ownership — properties designed not simply as homes, but as places to return to year after year. With [...]

Telling Our Stories

Let us take you on a journey from the coastal farms of Bostons North Shore to the managed forests of the Adirondacks to the rolling hills of central Vermont to the barrier beaches of Cuttyhunk Island.

In collaboration with Climb High Productions, you will hear from our consultants, foresters, brokers, clients, and collaborators about what makes LandVest an indispensable partner in your real estate journey. Enjoy these stories of special places; how people connect with them; and how we help make these places into lifetime memories and family legacies.

In our first episode, you meet Jim Monahan, a Senior Advisor with LandVest in Ipswich, Massachusetts, with 30 years of experience helping clients solve real estate problems and achieve ownership goals. Jims expertise in land planning and appraisal is one example of how we differentiate ourselves from other real estate firms.

On why he joined LandVest three decades ago,With a background in landscape architecture and design, I came to a realization at an early stage in my career that economics drive the decisions that affect the landscape and wanted to work at a more macro level and that brought me to LandVest.

Jim has worked in 32 states, internationally, and in his own back yard where he can be found picking up his farm share at Marshview Farm or taking a morning run at Sagamore Hill, two of the many properties that he has helped preserve over the years.

Describing Sagamore Hill, It was a 500-acre conservation effort involving the state, the towns of Hamilton, Ipswich, and Essex, The Trust for Public Land, and private donors. I was engaged to analyze and appraise the development rights and see the project through to conservation."

Marshview Farm, Ipswich, MA

On why he still enjoys the work: I think the most engaging part about my job and the reason I've done it for so long is that every property poses a new set of challenges. We've got a client that has a puzzle and they're missing some pieces. We formulate a plan of action and go through a troubleshooting process to help them achieve their goals.

Hear Jim telling his story in his own words in Reading the Land.

Up next is a story of forestry in the Adirondacks, see a preview of "Episode II: A Career Outside" here.

The Paul & Bunny Mellon Estate11.21.2025
