The owners of Jericho Brook Farm in Hartford, Vermont share their story and what they love about this pastoral farm that is just 6 miles from Dartmouth College.

What brought you to Jericho Brook Farm?

We purchased the farm in 1987. I went to Dartmouth, and wanted a picturesque quintessential Vermont farm, and we immediately fell in love with Jericho Brook Farm when we saw it. Sabra Fields chose our farm for one her famous prints! It was on the cover of Vermont Life's All Seasons Calendar in 2007.

What were some of the reasons you were attracted to this house?

We chose the farm because of its views, and its proximity to Dartmouth and Woodstock. We also loved that it is a 1790 beautiful classic farmhouse with a spectacular classic gambrel red barn. We have used the farm for 30 years as a vacation home to enjoy skiing, summers and fall foliage (which is truly spectacular at our farm because of its long-range westerly views and surrounding countryside).

Do you have a favorite room in the house?

Family room/kitchen/deck--this is a fabulous place to be and to enjoy huge warm fires. The top rear of property has incredible views of the Connecticut River Valley and Mt. Ascutney. We also love the solitude of Jericho Brook--so tranquil in summer, foliage and when we have deep snow cover.

What specific improvements have been made to the property?

After we purchased the property, we did a total renovation of the entire farmhouse, all barns and garage. We have continued to keep the property fully maintained and in tiptop shape.

Tell us about some of the propertys special features.

The 1790 beautiful craftsmanship with its super-wide pine flooring, post-and-beam construction, incredibly large barns, five bedrooms, wonderful family living area with extra-large fireplace, open kitchen and outdoor deck (completely rebuilt with new sliding doors) enhancing the views, beautiful formal living room with another fireplace, and a large family room with a picture window with more spectacular views.

Please provide us with any history that may be of interest to a prospective buyer.

Originally built in 1790 as a one-story farmhouse, the house was then added onto in the early 1900s The barns are over 100 years old. The property was the homestead farm of the Lyman family for about 100 years until 1963. The surrounding area is designated as a rural historic district because of its wide-open spaces and cultural significance as a unique upland farming community. There is no other place quite like this in the Upper Valley.

Why are you selling?

Our lives have changed. We now have our daughter and son-in-law with two granddaughters living near us in Greenwich; our son lives in Denver. With travel overseas, we just don't have time to enjoy the farm like we used to, and now wish to pass it on to someone else to enjoy it like we have over the past 30 years.
