Purple Kings Farm - Seven Decades of Stewardship in Williamstown, MA

Purple Kings Farm, exterior long shot

Purple Kings Farm

Shortly after graduating from Williams College in 1950, Ralph Mason purchased an 1880's farm with over 100 acres in Hopkins Forest, the very heart of Williams College's 2600 acres, and thus began nearly 70 years of stewardship.

He named the farm for the surrounding hills whose hues in winter are often a serene deep purple. Beneath the shadow of those hills, they raised their family, tended the land, shared their farm and lived with five generations, many friends, and Williams College associates. Renovations over the years have modernized the house, yet retained the historic features. For years, a grass tennis court and one hole golf range were well used and greatly enjoyed features of the acreage near the house. Purple Kings Farm

Over the years first Suffolk sheep, then Aberdeen Angus beef and horses grazed the many meadows. Hay, maple syrup, and a wide variety of vegetables were grown both for sale and family use. Three ponds were added to the property for swimming, fishing, watering the stock, and fire protection.
