Some properties are purchased for a moment in time. Others are held for generations.  Across New England and the Adirondacks, family compounds have long represented a distinct kind of ownership — properties designed not simply as homes, but as places to return to year after year. With [...]

Ask the Seller: Fieldstone in Woodstock, Vermont

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in one of LandVests properties?

We invite our owners to tell us a bit about their experience, what they love about their homes and a bit of their history. The owners of Fieldstone share their story about this lovely South Woodstock, Vermont farm. Capture1 What brought you to Fieldstone originally?

After a long search, we fell in love with Fieldstone and bought it as our second home in 1990. It reminded Jennifer of rural England where she grew up, offering tranquility and privacy. We both wanted to relax in an attractive community, nearby year round sporting facilities (golf, tennis, hiking, skiing and biking in our case).

We enjoy good dining and have always lived in wonderful communities with interesting people and activities. We also sought a second home which would be relatively easy to manage, and we have enjoyed working with excellent local contractors, and the Town services have proved to be excellent.

How have you used the property? It has been a year-round weekend retreat for many years, and we love the feeling of decompressing as we drove up from Connecticut. Woodstock has so much going on all year round that there is always plenty to do and nice, interesting people to do things with! VT0738-1 Approach Since retiring 15 years ago, we spend at least three months a year at Fieldstone, which is much loved by our grandchildren, who call it "Camp Vermont."

Why are you selling? The reason we are selling, with deep regret, is advancing years and recent health issues. As we love the area, we have bought a condo in Quechee.

What kinds of changes and updates have you made to the property? We have tried to keep the "feel" of the old farm, and to enhance this by creating gardens and planting trees and bushes; making a beach on the swimming pond; putting electricity lines by the house underground.

One big change that we particularly love was to winterize the family room. We tend to live in it because of the views. Now, it is delightful all year round, particularly in the winter, with the heating plus the wood burning stove.

We have bought some adjacent land.

"Fieldstone" was recently renamed Brown Hill Road - no tribute to us, but an owner of old named Billy Brown. We don't have the ancient deeds, but do have a tax bill of over a hundred years ago; taxes since seem to have risen a bit faster than inflation.

What will you miss most? We shall truly miss the expansive views over the ponds and fields and the privacy, and the convenience of so many great amenities nearby, not least the country store a short stroll at the bottom of the road.

We shall also miss snowshoeing and gathering mushrooms in the fall; watching the sun go down on a summer evening, sitting on the stone bench at the top of the meadow, or on our terrace; or looking up at night at the stars in the pure dark sky. No artificial lights here.

- Jennifer and Michael
