Built for Generations: Family Compounds Across New England & The Adirondacks05.12.2026

Some properties are purchased for a moment in time. Others are held for generations.  Across New England and the Adirondacks, family compounds have long represented a distinct kind of ownership — properties designed not simply as homes, but as places to return to year after year. With [...]

Ask the Seller: Barker Loop Camp
in Rangeley, Maine

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in one of LandVests properties? We invite our owners to tell us a bit about their experience, what they love about their homes, and a bit of their history. Here is what the owners of Barker Loop Camp, told us about their property, how they came to own it, and what they love about living here.

Captain Barker originally built the cabin in 1900. He ran steamships to Rangeley Lake for tourists. The region has a terrific history as a fishing and tourism destination in the 20th century.

We purchased the main cabin in 2008 and completely renovated it in the following two years. In 2015 we bought two additional cabins to add privacy and capacity to the lakeside compound.

We were originally drawn to Rangeley for its similarities to the Adirondacks. While purchasing and renovating several other cabins in the Rangeley area, the Barker property was listed for sale. Knowing its unique advantages, we put it under contract the first day on market.

Architect Travis Kenny did the remodel. The main cabin was fully modernized, additional insulation was added as well as new roofs, updated plumbing and electrical, a fireplace in the great room, and a more open kitchen floor plan. We were careful to maintain the authentic character and original material of the cabin wherever possible.

Special Features

The property's lake frontage is uniquely flat, allowing for superior water access.

Favorite room

We love relaxing in the Great Room by the fireplace or by the bar that seats two!

Favorite Spot on the Property

We love it all, but if we had to choose, the little cabin has a wonderful place to sit by the fire.

Why Sell?

Although it is hard to let such a special property go, our children are older and farther away. We would like to move somewhere further south to be closer to them.

5 Things We Love:

  • Our particular spot on the lake is excellent for sunsets.
  • It is also only 3 miles to downtown with restaurants and groceries.
  • The addition of the other cabins adds privacy to the property.
  • The sloping lawn to the lake has a unique frontage. Although it is the fourth largest lake in Maine, there are no jet skis allowed.
  • The outdoor recreation options are year-round!
