The owners of 1 & 7 Sears Roadin Southborough, Massachusetts share how they found this ideally-located historic Colonial-style home and what they love about its original features and design.

How did you come about owning this property, and when?

We bought the house in 1994 because we were living in Cambridge and wanted to move to a small town and start a family.

Why did you choose this location?

We had decided on the town of Southborough because it is a small community with great school options and geographically, it gave us flexibility to Boston and NY for work and family.

What first attracted you to this property?

We loved the old trees and the privacy the acreage gave us. Once inside, we fell in love with the amazing construction and beautiful details of the house itself.

Is there any historic significance of the property?

The house was built more than 100 years ago, and we are just the third family to steward the place. The J. M. Sears family built it in 1904 and used it a few weeks a year as one of their 5 getaway Estates (from their mansion on Arlington St overlooking the Public Garden in Downtown Boston). They were fascinating people. Mrs. Sears was a photographer and artist who was a dear friend of Isabella Stewart Gardner. Her daughter, Helen Sears, was famously painted by John Singer Sargent and that portrait hangs in the MFA in Boston.
