Some properties are purchased for a moment in time. Others are held for generations.  Across New England and the Adirondacks, family compounds have long represented a distinct kind of ownership — properties designed not simply as homes, but as places to return to year after year. With [...]

Ask the Seller: The Treehouse in Richmond, Massachusetts

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in one of LandVests properties? We invite our owners to tell us a bit about their experience, what they love about their homes and some of their history. The owners of 720 West Road in Richmond, Massachusetts share what it's like to live on a mountaintop treehouse in the woods.berkshires MA2077_11_CC

The Perfect Location

My wife and I were having dinner with friends who mentioned that a large parcel of land was for sale adjacent to their own country house. We looked at the land, the trails, and the bucolic views of the Berkshires from the peaks and decided to buy the property and build a house.

We had recently seen a home on the cover of Architectural Digest that we both loved and called the architect. He walked the property with us and designed a home that rises from the hilltop and is at once fun, filled with light, glass and stone and yet, remains elegant enough to entertain in. It was the perfect environment to raise two boys and a golden retriever. We spent winters sledding and summers swimming in the pool (heated, of course), and took advantage of all the music, theater, and dance the Berkshires had to offer, only minutes away.

My wife and I built our home as an oasis from the chaos of the big city. We took advantage of the peacefulness of living on top of a mountain in the forest. With exposed trees as the main posts, thirty-foot ceilings, stone fireplaces, and walls of windows on every floor, we always feel as if we're outdoors when we're indoors, a stark contrast from life in Manhattan.

berkshires MA2077_4_CC_CCOur home is the perfect setting for holidays. We often entertain our friends and family around a nine-foot dining room table and sit late into the night in front of our large fireplace, built into a three-story stone wall. We love sitting on the back porch in the summer. And when our kids were young, they loved watching sports with what seemed like an endless stream of friends in our library.

Today, after enjoying our home for nearly thirty years, it is time for us to move on, to share our home with another family who seeks a paradise in the woods where they can raise their own family and enjoy life in the great outdoors of the Berkshires.
