Buying an Island in Maine

Last weekend, Financial Times ran an excellent article titled, The Beginners Guide to Buying a Private Island, which featured Ram Island, currently listed for sale by LandVest in Camden, Maine. The article discussed the pros and cons of island ownership in different parts of the world with some well-researched tips for any prospective island owner.

Ram Island. in Financial Times In Midcoast Maine, the waters are dotted with islands. Larger islands, such as Islesboro, Vinalhaven and North Haven, are inhabited year-round and serviced by ferry. Others are smaller, private, accessible only by boat, and afford owners the opportunity to create your own kingdom just minutes from the mainland or miles offshore, says LandVest broker Joe Sortwell in the article.

The article points out that building on an island is expensive and logistically challenging because all materials must be shipped from the mainland. Fortunately, it is possible to purchase your own island with the fundamentals in place. Nothing quite equals the tremendous sense of place that comes with being the steward of your own private kingdom. LandVest currently has several private islands for sale. Here is a selection:
