What I Love about Boston in the Summer

Boston is vibrant year-round. Summertime is a season where tourists tend to flock to area attractions. People line up for Duck Boat Tours, congregate around street musicians at Faneuil Hall or take a Swan Boat ride in the Public Garden.

For locals, it can be a time to re-discover the city. Many residents clear out for vacations or their summer homes. The roads are less congested, and parking is easier to find. This aspect -- fewer locals to crowd the roads -- is my #1 favorite thing about Boston in the summer. The city is more relaxed, as if it, too, is on summer vacation.

Each day of the week features a different theme which takes place on an entertainment barge: Soul Tuesdays, Rat Pack Wednesdays (my pick) and Movie Fridays. Book a table to dine al fresco at the hotels waterfront restaurant Otherwise, theres plenty of space to stand or sit along the Harborwalk to watch the entertainment on a floating stage. Fun for all ages! Check out the schedule here. summer in the city. waterfront   Go Swimming at Charles River Park Summer memberships are available to take advantage of what I call the country club in the city. Enjoy a dip or swim laps in Bostons largest outdoor pool. There are plenty of lounge chairs, as well a kiddie pool. You can even rent a cabana for the day. Members may use the expansive health club adjacent to the pool. The outdoor caf allows you to stay for hours without worrying about food or drink. Or bring your own picnic. summer in the city. pool   Diner en Blanc Translated as dinner in white, this tradition began in Paris 30 years ago. It has expanded across six continents, including 30 cities in the US. In each city, the format is the same. Guests gather at various places before the evening begins. The location for the party is kept a secret until a designated time, when guests depart and parade to the location. Its a sight to behold, hundreds of people donning white outfits with picnics in tow. Even the tables, chairs and decorations one brings must be white. In Boston, past secret locations have been Government Center, the Childrens Museum and The Rose Kennedy Greenway. summer in the city. Dinner
