LONELY PLANET

Travel experts from Lonely Planet, the iconic go-to travel guide company, recently compiled a list of the top ten destinations in the United States that travelers should visit in 2018. Among the list of underrated and captivating places to visit is our very own Midcoast Maine, an area that is no longer known for being the quiet backwoods it once was. Taking the sixth spot on this top ten list, this stretch of coastal Maine was selected by Lonely Planets travel experts due to Maines up-and-coming culture of craft breweries, local vineyards, maritime museums, and its exploding foodie scene.

Among the many charming coastal villages within Midcoast Maine, one of our favorites is Bristol.

BRISTOL

Southerly's location in Bristol makes it convenient to visit some of the things Bristol is best known for.

Pemaquid Beach Park tops the list of attractions in Bristol. With a quarter-mile stretch of white sand beach, visitors can enjoy swimming, relaxing, and a snack bar. Pemaquid Point Light is also here, which is a historic U.S. lighthouse located at the tip of Pemaquid Neck.

Near Pemaquid Beach, Colonial Pemaquid State Historic Site is another attraction in Bristol, which is a publicly owned property operated by the State of Maine. Here, visitors can tour the reconstructed Fort William Henry and archaeological remains and artifacts found on the site, such as pottery, coins, musket balls, fortifications, and more.

Bristol is ideally located near incredible amenities in neighboring coastal villages. Some of the most popular nearby attractions include museums, botanical gardens, a country club, craft breweries, and restaurants.

BEYOND BRISTOL

To the east, visitors and residents will find the beautiful waterfront communities of Camden, Rockport, and Rockland. The Farnsworth Art Museum and Wyeth Center, located in Rockland, is a special place in this area as it specializes in American art. Permanent collections include works by artists Thomas Sully, Eastman Johnson, Maurice Prendergast, and more.

To the west, tourists and the people of Bristol will find the private educational institution Bowdoin College in Brunswick, the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath, the popular village of Boothbay Harbor with its fine establishment the Boothbay Harbor Country Club, and Maines premier tourist attraction: the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, which offers 270 acres of gardens and over a mile of waterfront.

Other nearby amenities include a host of craft breweries and restaurants. Flight Deck Brewing, in Brunswick, is known for its year-round favorite craft beer, as well as prototype and experimental recipes. Another notable spot is Boothbay Craft Brewery & Tavern, which is popular for its artisanal craft beer and tavern brewpub. Finally, Damariscotta River Grill wraps up the cuisine list with its fine dining, offering upscale seafood and a lengthy wine list.
