Some properties are purchased for a moment in time. Others are held for generations.  Across New England and the Adirondacks, family compounds have long represented a distinct kind of ownership — properties designed not simply as homes, but as places to return to year after year. With [...]

Ask the Seller: Brush Hill Estate, Milton, MA

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in one of LandVests properties? We invite our owners to tell us a bit about their experience, what they love about their homes and a bit of their history. Here is what the owners of 31 Brush Hill Lane shared with us about their property.

MA2028_18_CC How did you come to own this property and when?

We purchased the property twenty-one years ago. We were living in Brookline and wanted more space: something large and elegant with a feeling of intimacy, that would still be close to friends and Bostons cultural attractions with easy access to highways and the airport. Principal goals were a tennis court, a library, and a chance to pursue gardening, as well as variety of rooms, both for entertaining and for our own pleasure.

What are your favorite rooms in the house and why?

We enjoy the versatility of our space and have lots of choices for time together and apart and for differing activities. The fireplaced library is a wonderful place to read and listen to music. Our oak-paneled living room is the perfect place to entertain guests. We love our formal dining room, whether entertaining or for a quiet supper. The sunny breakfast porch, the spacious kitchen and family room, the sun room -- each is a space that has its favorite moments.

MA2028_17_CC What are your favorite spots on the property?

The grounds while just less than two acres, the beautifully treed grounds have surprising variety. There is a secluded pine forest in which weve created an Arts & Crafts designed walkway. A walled garden sits below the brick terrace where we enjoy meals and entertaining. A spectacular tulip tree shades both. There is a rolling side lawn suitable for croquet or badminton, a circular garden fronting the house, and several other garden areas -- plus the tennis court with a flagstone terrace adjoining it.

MA2028_14 What are the top reasons someone should buy this property?

  1. The setting: on a private lane of only eight homes, each on large lots. Nowhere in the Boston metropolitan area is one so close to downtown in such rural and scenic surroundings.
  2. The house: a well-designed, well-kept stucco and slate estate house. It has large rooms, good flow, different types of spaces, and a big enough kitchen for caterers. There are plenty of bedrooms and an in-law apartment as well as a new oversized garage for the car collector.
  3. The grounds: beautifully treed and landscaped with a tennis court, afford country estate ambience just eight miles from downtown.
  4. The location: has kept us within easy distance to friends and to concerts and plays in the city. It provides easy access in all other directions -- across town, the South End and Back Bay, and south to 128/95. Its very much in the middle of things.
