Get to Know Katharine Hepburns Coastal Enclave: Fenwick, Connecticut

To me, it is well, as I said paradise. This is how Katharine Hepburn refers to her Fenwick beach home in her 1991 autobiography, Me: Stories of My Life. This is how the Boston Globe began their recent article Katharine Hepburns Connecticut: Set on narrow lanes, and designated a Historic District in 1975, Fenwick is a tidy place, yet untamed. (Sound like Hepburn?)

Connecticut real estateSeemingly unchanged in the last century, this tiny community within Old Saybrook, Connecticut has a breezy informality and a sense of intimacy that feels like a throwback to a time where kids ride bikes to the beach and neighbors greet one another along the narrow lanes between the grey-shingled houses.

Even simply turning into Fenwick and following the winding road along the golf course, slows the pulse and calms the mind. The lanes meander among lawns and hydrangeas and cars are met with smiles and waves. Despite its unspoiled and relaxed character, Fenwick is a vibrant community, evidenced by the smell of fresh paint, new shingles going onto rambling summer cottages and kids and dogs out enjoying the sunshine.
