Ask the Seller: 216 Summer Street, Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in one of LandVests North Shore properties? We invite our owners to tell us a bit about their experience, what they love about their homes and their history.

We loved hearing how this owner's father bought the mansion so he could have the carriage house. Here is what else the owner of216 Summer Street had to share with us about her Manchester-by-the-Sea home:

North Shore: Manchester-by-the-Sea real estateHow did you come about owning this property, and when?

Our family has owned the house for about 40 years. My father bought the whole Stockton property - including the mansion - so that he could have the carriage house. The carriage house was my dads office. He was a physicist and an advertising guru. He hosted clients from near and far who were always in awe of the place.

What is your favorite room in the house and why?

The great room! Its high ceilings, large dimensions, and original paneling make it an unusual and beautiful room. The stone fireplace and huge barn doors only add to that. Its great looking through the wall of windows to the garden and pond in warmer months, and in the winter really cozy with the fireplace crackling, and the bookshelves full.North Shore: Manchester-by-the-Sea real estate

Do you have a favorite spot on the property?

Theres a bench by the pond thats my favorite spot. We have resident ducks and turtles, and the place is a haven for all kinds of birds. It invokes a special far-and-away feeling, so much more away than a mile from Manchester village. I lived in Manchester through college, and Ive never found another place like the carriage house.

North Shore: Manchester-by-the-Sea real estatePlease provide us with any history that may be of interest to a prospective buyer.

The Stockton family built the mansion in the early 1900s; I believe as a wedding gift. The property was host to elite social events and parties with the horses and carriages kept at the carriage house. They filled in the swimming pool some years ago, and there are still vestiges of the tennis courts - up past the pond.

MA1971_13What are the top reasons someone should buy this property?

  • Rustic home with much original detail - barn doors, paneling, large spaces, and tons of character
  • Beautiful and peaceful acreage
  • Renovations include roof, kitchen, baths, septic, electric, security
