On May 27th, in the small coastal towns of Rochester and Mattapoisett an 80 year old tradition kept right on growing. Two person teams in homemade boats paddled from Grandma Hartleys Reservoir in Rochester along the Mattapoisett River to the Herring Weir in Mattapoisett. The winning teams complete the challenging course in just under 2 hours. The spirit of friendly competition and camaraderie make it an annual tradition handed down from generation to generation. The race is hosted by the Rochester Fire Department and includes a ham and bean supper on Saturday night. Overall, approximately 65 teams participated in five different divisions. It is events like this that remind us what a special community we are part of in the small coastal communities of the South Coast of Massachusetts.
