Some properties are purchased for a moment in time. Others are held for generations.  Across New England and the Adirondacks, family compounds have long represented a distinct kind of ownership — properties designed not simply as homes, but as places to return to year after year. With [...]

Paynter Saltwater Farm,
Essex, Massachusetts
from the Owners Perspective

1Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in some of LandVests properties? We invite our owners to tell us a bit about their own experiences, what they love about their homes and bit of their history. We caught up with Bob Borden and his wife Daphne to talk with them about their property, Paynter Farm, a working farm on over 10 acres in Essex, Massachusetts.

Bob and his wife, Daphne moved into Paynter Farm, the property of their dreams in August of 1981. Bob who once was the president of LandVest and now is the chairman chose Essex, because it was and still is an easy commute to downtown Boston every morning. When they moved in to the farm they said the house and grounds had been let go but over the years, with the help of a little flock of sheep, they have cleared a view down through the fields, across the marsh and out to the Essex River and Hog Island. They have made this property into a suburban oasis where one could saddle up and ride for miles out your back door, or cross-country ski, walk, bike, swim or kayak out to a 'private' 100 yard salt water swimming pool, or just sit down in two Adirondack chairs and watch the sun set over the great marsh.

Over 32 years with their four-legged companions both with fur and wool by their side they have made this beautiful land home, filled with so many unforgettable memories. They both have loved this farm and told us, We have been blessed to care take this property as our children grew up but have now moved away. It is time to hand over the reins to new energy, fresh eyes, and to someone who will hopefully value all this farm has to offer. One gets old, but this property just keeps evolving. May the next 'care taker' be surprised and delighted by all it has to offer.
