Meadow House

Living with light and a view. Designed to be a family retreat, the Meadow House in South Woodstock is an Arts and Crafts-inspired Vermont farmhouse on 94 acres. Award winning Boston architect, John MacDonald, used "classic New England details with a level of control that is evocative of a contemporary structure."

Clad with cedar shingles, indigenous stone and a copper roof, the three-bedroom house features a unique curved exterior to take full advantage of the light and pastoral view. Curves are embedded in the interior as well in such detailing as the radiused windows and doors and in the form of the stone fireplace. From each room, looking through the large glass windows, are views of stone walls, perennial gardens, a large pond with an island, an apple orchard and a spectacular view of Mount Ascutney.

Built by Housewright Construction in 2008, there is an impeccable attention to fine craftsmanship in the structure, which is a hybrid of a Douglas Fir timber frame and conventional stick framing.

The landscape design by Shepard Butler allows for a conscious and unconscious connection to the land, which invites a sense of peace, relaxation and fun. Swim and fish in the pond, or hike up behind the house through the sugar maples to a small cabin with a woodstove. The long range views from the cabin are to the North and a dramatic view of Ascutney to the East can be found further down the trail.
