Fling Island

Fling Island is a pristine, uninhabited island in East Penobscot Bay with excellent views in all directions including spectacular sunset views looking back over the islands to the Camden Hills. The island is mostly wooded and there are open areas defined by natural shrubs, ferns and grass. The bold and varied shoreline includes dramatic bluffs on the eastern side, with views of Eagle Island, and the west, north and south sides are lined with pocket beaches and smooth ledge.

The island’s name can be traced back to 1787 but it does not have any known history of settlement. According to a legend, the island’s name came about when a bear was “flung” from this island to Bear Island, but this has been widely disregarded as fiction. More credibly, the island was used to pasture livestock from neighboring Eagle Island from approximately 1840 to 1940; and today the island is a refuge for a variety of seabirds.
